Hoosier Riverwatch

Are you a certified Hoosier Riverwatch volunteer? Would you like to be one? The Association needs your help.

As a part of your Association's efforts to maintain our lakes chain as one of the cleanest in all of the Midwest, we are in the beginning stages of creating an ongoing effort to MONITOR our lakes and inlet streams. We want to determine how our time, effort and money are helping us maintain and hopefully improve water quality in ALL of the 7,400 acres of the Oliver-Olin-Martin watershed.

The Hoosier Riverwatch program was developed by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to recruit, train, and certify volunteers. These volunteers then help with water sampling and data collection, advocate for healthy lakes and streams, and communicate with individual groups in local communities about the importance of good natural resources stewardship.

So, if you ARE a certified Riverwatch volunteer, please consider putting those skills to work for your own lakes. If you are not, but are interested in learning more about it, and possibly enrolling in a certification class, please review the information found on this IDEM web page:  www.in.gov/idem/riverwatch/

More about the class and a schedule of upcoming classes can be found here:  www.in.gov/idem/riverwatch/2364.htm (click on the link 2015 Training Schedule [PDF] around the center of the page to open a document with the schedule). This could also be a tremendous opportunity for any high school or college age student with interest in natural resources conservation, and would likely qualify for any community service requirements that may be required of them.

If you are interested in serving as a certified volunteer for your lakes, or if you have any questions, please contact Patrick Wiltshire at patrick.wiltshire@gmail.com, or 260-463-2126 or by replying to this e-mail.

Thank you!
